Top 10 Spring 2014 Beauty Trends to Wear Right Now

October_Top10Trends_Main_450x500As much as we love witnessing the incredible feats of backstage makeup and hair pros—towering beehives, semi-dangerous 3D nail art—sometimes we just want styles that we regular folk can wear. Luckily, spring 2014 is all about accessible beauty looks. Here, our top 10 faves (and no need to wait till spring to try them out):

1. Shiny Chignons at Alice + Olivia

The low-slung chignons that Nick Irwin whipped up at Alice + Olivia were both sleek and feminine. Unlike in past seasons where the trend for updos was to intentionally make them look undone and a little messy, these buns were pristine and didn’t have a single hair out of place. To get the elegant style, use a shine spray on dry hair, followed by a flat iron. Then, secure hair into a low ponytail with an elastic, and apply mousse through the entire pony to add hold. Finish by twisting and coiling your pony into a low bun and securing with French pins.

2. Berry Lips at Helmut Lang

Dark lips are perfect for fall—and surprisingly translatable to warmer weather. Our favorite version popped up at Helmut Lang, where Hannah Murray for NARS created a deep matte cherry lip, paired with a sporty flush on the cheeks.

3. The Extreme Ruffian Mani at Ruffian

We’re huge fans of the Ruffian team—not least for their very first line of lacquers. On their spring 2014 runway, nail artist Cheryl Natoli put the new colors to work backstage on an updated version of the brand’s trademark crescent mani.

4. Low Ponytails at Jason Wu

How low can you go? At Jason Wu, Odile Gilbert forKérastase had ponytails so far down, the hair ties grazed the nape of the neck. The key to the style: Apply a serum to dry hair before using a flat iron. Add a metallic cuffed ponytail holder for extra polish.

5. Pop of Pink at Cynthia Rowley

When it comes to spring beauty, bright bubblegum lips are a perennial hit. stila debuted its new fuchsia Stay All Day gloss in a “vinyl” finish at Cynthia Rowley, and it was definitely our favorite pink of the week. If the high-shine look isn’t your speed, just blot with a tissue after applying.

6. Nail Stripes at Tibi

As much as we admire complex nail art, we love a design that even the shakiest of hands can pull off. Our reigning favorite: the black stripes from Jin Soon Choi at Tibi. The design was incredibly fresh, especially against the white backdrop, and we like the asymmetry of painting only three nails per hand.

7. Black Headbands At Vera Wang

You’ll be seeing a lot more thick, black, stretchy headbands come spring, in no small part due to Bumble and bumble’s brilliant Jimmy Paul, who did the hair for Vera Wang. Once reserved for the gym, when worn with a slightly dressier outfit, the accessory adds an element of minimalist elegance. Major plus: It couldn’t be any easier to pull off on your own.

8. Emphasized Cat Eye at Kate Spade

While a little retro for real life, the stark two-toned cat eye Neil Scibelli created at Kate Spade can easily be adapted for an everyday look. Instead of a bright white line, use a cream or powder highlighter on accent areas like your inner and outer corners. If you really want your eyes to pop, smudge highlighter under your lower lash line for an understated double-liner effect.

October_Top10Trends_Slide_06_450x5009. Orange Digits at Suno

If your first thought is, “Orange? Not with my skin tone!” we’ve got good news: The shade used by Alice Lane for Maybelline at the Suno show didn’t veer far from a classic red in terms of color and brightness. A good in-between step, if you’re still wary about test-driving a true tangerine shade, is an orangey-red lipstick to see if you like the look.

10. Off-to-the-side Waves at Rebecca Taylor

Anytime we notice a pretty style that looks allllmost like bedhead hair brushed to one side, we’re happy campers. At Rebecca Taylor, that undone effect of loose, textured waves was exactly what Rutger for Oribe was after. Not blessed with natural waves? Fake it with a 1½ in. curling iron and texturizing spray.
